lock it up, bp

as a lifelong gulf coast resident (excepting those four years i spent on the mountain in tennessee), this oil spill business actually makes me sick. but what makes me more upset about it is the lackluster reaction by everyone except those living in the thick of it. i'm embarrassed about the lack of EFFORT on any one's part, especially the white house. intellectually i know that the spill is bp's fault and therefore, they should have the responsibility to fix it. but this is an incredible moment to move the country beyond its ridiculous commitment to oil and into new areas of energy research and all that jazz. i know that it might be hypocritical as i do drive an SUV, but that's really because my parents believe i am a bad driver. it isn't like i drive a hummer or anything.

i mean, i don't know what the next step is, but it is heartbreaking to think about what is happening to the coast. more than most areas of the country, we get beaten up on by mother nature (um, hello, hurricane season?!?) and now its by negligence of an oil company that is probably spending more money on lobbying than on coming up with the next step. they've tried a bio-dome, golf balls and now mud. does that sound ridiculous to anyone? that's what i thought.

beyond petroleum, indeed.
